Every team should win the first game in their new stadium, that's just the rule, but you don't want to blow your wad. The Washington Nationals opened the as yet to be renamed for a ton of dough - Nationals Stadium last night in storybook fashion. After getting the first hit, scoring the first run, and reveling in the fact that they weren't playing at RFK any longer, they got a big hit from their star to win the game.
With the score knotted at 2's in the bottom of the 9th, Ryan Zimmerman (a Virginia Native) stood with a 2-2 count and two outs. He knocked the next pitch out of the yard to give the Nationals a 1-0 record at their new home ground. The only thing that could have made this experience better, was if the cheers he heard upon winning the game, came from all 41,888 seats. Instead, there were only 39,389 people on hand for opening day. That means. 2,500 tickets went unsold which is a fucking travesty. I know it was cold and all, but this was the first game in a new park. Had I known that it wasn't sold out, I would have gone, but I guess I'll have to wait till April 11th for the game with XL.
